Pilot Plant Testing from Raw Material to Corrugated Box

Pulp and paper companies from all over the world turn to The Packaging Greenhouse in Karlstad, Sweden, to test processes and end products in one of the industry’s few independent and comprehensive test environments. One example is Metso Paper who, together with a customer from North America, wanted to evaluate various characteristics of corrugated boxes before a possible paper machine rebuild.

- With a commercial scaled pilot machine and a unique network in our surroundings we are able to offer tests and evaluations at all stages of the production chain, from raw material to end products, says Susanne Öhman, president at The Packaging Greenhouse.

Metso Paper’s customer wanted to test different qualities and product characteristics of the intended end product before a possible rebuild. An assignment The Packaging Greenhouse took full responsibility for.

The Packaging Greenhouse produced different qualities and grammages in their pilot machine, which later was converted into corrugated boxes by Sott Packaging System in Karlstad. The properties of the boxes were then tested at Stora Enso Research.

For Metso Paper’s customer, who was very satisfied with the services offered by The Packaging Greenhouse, the tests gave valuable information on how to move forward.

- The advantage of a commercial scaled pilot machine is that we are able to run small batches and at the same time quickly and easily simulate our customers’ production conditions. Testing and evaluating product characteristics, not only paper qualities, is highly appreciated, says Hanna Karlsson, head of the pilot operations at The Packaging Greenhouse.
